The straitjacket escape trick was made famous by Harry Houdini around the turn of the 19th century. While touring an insane asylum Houdini devised the then un-heard of trick.  Looking into a padded cell he saw a maniac struggling against the jacket. Houdini began experimenting the next day and soon the straitjacket with its spine-tingling fascination had entered into his repertoire. Houdini famously proclaimed that in order to remove a straitjacket it would require the performer to dislocate both shoulders in order to gain enough slack necessary to pull the arms out of the sleeves.
